On a daily basis, people walk, run and enjoy being outdoors but while doing that, objects like keys and coins get lost in the process. In real sense, a thorough check would reveal that there are a lot of objects lying around waiting to be found and metal detecting is the answer. The popularity of metal detecting increased with the invention of the metal detector. This was in the 19th century where using magnetism and electricity, the detector was used in determining the possible location of metal objects. This activity has grown to become a fun hobby for people of all ages and below is a list of tips for beginners:
1. Understand your location and detector
The key to this is having all the knowledge you can about both your location and detector. This may sound too obvious but your detector’s capabilities, technology and settings are paramount. For this, you can read manuals, watch YouTube videos, browse forums etc. the most important thing however is to work on it yourself. Go out and try!
2. Making the right choice
Whether the plan is to search for relics, beach hunt, or search for the purest gold, finding the best type of detector should be the first priority, http://www.metaldetectorjudge.com for some options. Some detectors are made for gold while others are for coins. Some are waterproof and therefore enable the whole unit into the surf while some are water resistant and only allow submerging of the coil. Some machines work better in fresh water and others in salty. You mostly get what has been paid for. Cheap machines allow for the digging of targets but recovery of mostly trash. Top of the range detectors on the other hand yield results on the very first day!
3. Swinging the detector
The method of swinging the detector is just as vital as choosing the right detector. Swinging too fast does not allow the machine to pick up small targets simply because its contact time with the ground was too short. No targets will therefore be heard. Also, swinging too far from the ground will not yield any results if the object was closer.
It is also important to learn how to dig. Digging up a target up and leaving no trace of disturbance to the ground is considered quite necessary if you wish to go back to that spot. Use the proper digging tools and cover the holes appropriately. You can opt to dig a “plug” which involves cutting a grass portion so as to not destroy the roots and then carefully applying the grass that is loose back. This helps replenish the area quicker rather than having to leave a crater. Moreover, efficiency is improved when the right tools are used for digging.
5. The right equipment
Just like in digging, you ought to bring the right equipment with you. This helps in digging better, staying out longer and makes you enjoy the whole experience. In metal detecting, it’s the digging that can sometimes get a bit rough. Bending over repeatedly can get hard for the back and knees. The right pants, gloves and knee pads are therefore crucial for this exercise. The digging time can also be greatly reduced if a pin pointer is used.
